Treasure Island & Sunset Beach
Treasure Island consists of four islands off of the Intracoastal Waterway and the beachfront barrier island that is home to a small strip of iconic hotels that are reminiscent of days gone by. The “inland” islands are Paradise Island and the Isles of Capri and Palms. All three are residential havens of beautiful waterfront homes offering a classic beach lifestyle. Local ordinances all but preclude the inland island homes from being used as vacation rentals. (Though they make terrific winter homes for our host of snowbirds who come here to nest every January!) Happily there are many other vacation rental options along Gulf Blvd and West Gulf Blvd, from the southern tip of Sunset Beach at Lands’ End to the more central portion, at South Beach; and finally along the sand itself near the northern border.
Treasure Island enjoys the widest of the southern Pinellas beaches. It is a beautiful stretch of pristine white sand and protective Dunes that leads to the Gulf of Mexico to the west and a fun, illuminated boardwalk to the east. The boardwalk is unique to Treasure Island, and like the wide expanse of beach, the envy of other beachfront communities. The boardwalk is perfect for biking, strolling and rollerblading. As you stroll along it, you can stop to enjoy live music, food and drink at many different beachfront locations. On a Sunday evening, at the southern end, you can join the Drum Circle that is a weekly, fun, family event celebrating the sunset and local drumming talents.
There is no need to leave the island; but if you choose to do so; as always, there are many fabulous options open. Downtown St. Petersburg is about 15 minutes away and a straight shot down First Avenue South or Central Avenue. Once in the downtown area, you can enjoy the “Riveria-esque” waterfront cafes and visit world-class museums, like the Dali or the Chilhuly Exhibit! If Major League Baseball is your passion, catch a Tampa Bay Rays’ game at Tropicana Field! Shopping is also a great pleasure in the city center. Our personal favorite is Sundial, where you can shop until you drop into a chair at one of the many fabulous restaurants also there. Make sure you check out Locale Market while at Sundial. It is a grocery store that is a surprising and delightful experience with exotic selections that pander to the pallet!
